After Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies and his team, Bayern Munich, won the Champions League in Europe over the weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his congratulations to the 19-year-old left.

It is more than the poise he possesses on the pitch despite his age. It goes beyond the irresistible success story of a boy who arrived in Canada as a refugee and became a key player in the game.

His request to the prime minister is an allusion to travel restrictions as the pandemic has left him away from home in Alberta. The Canadian striker won one of soccer’s most important competitions. The former coaches of Alphonso Davies say he has become a good role model. Also, he can be considered one of Canada’s most important athletes.

His story cannot be ignored. It attracts much praise from the UN Refugee Agency and Canadian politicians across the country.

From refugees to a great soccer striker in the world

For Bayern fans, this is not too strange a player when Alphonso Davies has shined in the last two seasons. But not many people know about the difficult past with the war and the defender in 2000. Young Davies was born in a tent in Buduburam refugee camp, Ghana when his parents first arrived here.

Alphonso’s father, Deborah, did not want the family to stay in Ghana long due to political instability and poverty. After many checks and interviews, the Davies eventually moved to Canada as a refugee. He was only 5 years old and they settled in Windsor, Ontario.

The move to North America changed the lives of the Davies family and the player himself. That’s where the African-born boy got into football and was discovered by Vancouver Whitecaps at the age of 14.

Alphonso’s talent blossomed very quickly. A year later, he became the youngest player to sign for the United Soccer League (USL). He was at the age of 15. After just five months into the second division, Alphonso Davies was promoted to the Vancouver Whitecaps 1st team to play in the Major America (MLS).

Realizing that excellence, Canada is determined to have Alphonso for the national team. He became a Canadian citizen in June 2017, soon after becoming the youngest player to play for Canadian soccer in a friendly match with Curacao.
