How did Bayern get Alphonso Davies from Canadian football? (Part 1)
Alphonso Davies has established himself as one of the most exciting names in world football since joining Bayern from the Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018.
At the age of 15, Alphonso Davies became the first player born in the new millennium (2000) to play at the MLS, in Vancouver Whitecaps (15 years, 8 months, and 15 days). A year later, he became the youngest player to score for Canada.
However, right from the time, Davies has not released, Canadian “raw pearl” has caught the eye of scouts in the world’s top football teams, including Bayern.
Interest in a Canadian footballer whose parents are Liberian and born in a refugee camp in Ghana has increased after impressive performances. Man United, Barca, PSG, and Bayern continuously send scouts to the matches of Vancouver Whitecaps.
Former Man United scout Jorge Alvial claims he sent 40 scout reports back to Davies to urge the Manchester Reds to quickly recruit the player.
Barca president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, was mentioned by football legend Hristo Stoichkov about Davies, but the head of the Nou Camp team ignored him when he knew that this boy was a Canadian national.
At the time PSG decided to stash by giving a large amount of money, but according to The Province – Davies soon made their own decision.
Bayern is a Bundesliga team
This is the ideal destination for young players looking to develop their careers to new heights. Bayern’s achievement in turning young talents into international stars is unquestionable, including David Alaba, Serge Gnabry, or Joshua Kimmich. This convinced Davies to choose the Allianz Arena as a stop.
However, it is rare to know that Davies is influenced by a rather anonymous name. It is goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, a teammate at the Vancouver club. Marinovic started his professional career in Germany. He had played for under-established clubs such as Wehen and Munich Ismaning, Munich 1860, and Unterhaching.
Davies shines at Vancouver Whitecaps
It was Marinovic who gave the opinion to Marco Neppe, the incumbent chief scout of Bayern, about his efforts to pursue Davies. After studying Davies’ talent, Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and legal director Michael Gerlinger and Neppe flew to Vancouver on July 18, 2018, to meet with Davies and his agent, Nick Househ. The signing was complete, for a record MLS fee at the time (around 10 million euros) and only going on for a week.
